Fernwoodceramic studio

A quiet room, a wheel, and as much clay as an evening allows.

Fernwood is a six-wheel studio running small classes for beginners and open studio time for people who already know their way around a kiln.

What we run

Wheel throwing

Six weeks, one evening a week. Centring, pulling walls, trimming, and a first glaze firing. Everything you make is yours to keep.

6 weeks · 12 people max

Hand building

No wheel involved. Slabs, coils and press moulds — the fastest way to make something you will actually use at home.

4 weeks · 10 people max

Open studio

Members book a wheel and work on their own. Clay, glazes and firings are billed by weight at the end of the month.

Monthly membership

Glaze workshop

A single Saturday on glaze chemistry: testing tiles, layering, and why the same bucket behaves differently in a full kiln.

One day · 8 people max

The studio

Fernwood started in 2019 in a former joinery workshop, mostly because the floor could take the weight of a kiln and nobody minded the noise. There are six wheels, two electric kilns, a slab roller, and a wall of glazes that we mix ourselves.

Classes stay small on purpose. Twelve people is the point where a tutor stops teaching and starts firefighting.

Most people arrive having never touched clay. That is the normal starting point, and the first evening is built around it.
